Donald

12x16 oil on linen board

I've run out of new paintings to show that are dry, so I'm going back in time. This is a pre- blog portrait of Donald Hildreth a fellow painter who studio I used to go to his studio where we and one or two others would privately paint models. One day the model canceled and we did "dueling Portraits". I have this on my web sight, but I don't think I've posted it on my bolg. I don't think I've done a portrait as strong as this one since. I think it helped I knew him so well, combined with taking lessons from Jove Wang at the time and Donald has such distinctive planes on his face. His expression make him look like he's about make me his bitch, but he's a real sweet guy. Find his work at: http://tirageart.com/artists/hildreth.shtml

El Monte Light & Eric Merrell class

Here is a trailer along the San Gabriel River where Sharon and I bike most weekends. This is in El Monte near a little Mexican Rodeo arena. I liked how the light was hitting the trailer and the simple elements framing it.

I also want to mention a friend and fellow painter I admire is having a Plein Air in Malibu next weekend Information below-- He's a good teacher and great artist at 29! I was going to take the class myself this weekend as I'm getting to tight again and want to get back to simpler more stylized painting with more feeling than tight painting. To bad I am jammed with freelance work. He's great with color and simplifying scenes down to their essence.

Eric's work--"Stability."

#931 - Plein Air in Malibu

Instructor: Eric Merrell
Dates: Fri.-Sun., June 29th-July 1st, 9am-4pm
Cost: $300
In this workshop you will learn how to paint what you see, not what you think you see. Learn how to interpret Nature in terms of paint, using light and color to create form. Color relationships, design/composition and all the aspects of painting outdoors will be discussed as well. What better time or place to study color than sun-drenched summer in Malibu, California? Ample time will be given each day to the demos by the instructor as well as individual painting time for the students.

Visit www.ericmerrell.com or www.laafa.org for more info.

A little night shot in the industrial areas of LA between the La River and East LA. Just a quick 11x14 to keep my atrophying oil hand in.

Opening: Thursday, June 14, 6-9pm
During the Downtown Art Walk www.downtownartwalk.com
Artists: Jamie Ennen, Dick Heimbold, Star Higgins and William Wray.

This will be an evolving six week plus exhibition due to the fact that the City of Los Angeles has begun eminent domain proceedings to take over our beloved 1896 building, the birthplace of the Gallery Row Organization and The Gallery Row District. In light of these developments we are calling this exhibition a “Cash & Carry” style show where art works will be allowed to be taken when purchased (credit & checks accepted). Works sold will be replaced by work by the same artist or another landscape artist we currently represent, perhaps through September 8th!

Ennen, Heimbold, Higgins and Wray all paint in the plein air tradition and share the compelling passion of discovering a captivating view and capturing a moment in time.

Private and Sacred Path

Another path to the coast to a house in Cambria. Done one vacation a while back, recently touched up. Can't fix the even horizon line though. Oil 6x8

Oil 8x10 on linen board. This is In Sierra Madre, a side access entrance to the retreat of a Group of Holy Father Christ like religious dudes who will be mega rich when they finally sell the land they are on. It's the last and largest undeveloped piece of property in the area. There Holy sects title escapes me at the moment. It's something like" Sacred Divinity Brothers of the Bleeding Baby Jesus" or something. It sounds vaguely pedophileish these days. I've painted several of the paths there, this being the latest. The composition is slightly blocked by the elements that literally block the path, but folks tell me it's not an issue.
